about

Originally released as a vinyl LP in the spring of 1980, Rhythms And Blues has long been unavailable. The pieces are each named for the instrument on which they're performed and each exemplifies an approach to extended techniques as a function of Sharp's improvisational and compositional strategies. Heard in retrospect, strands of sonic DNA in these pieces may be interpreted as tribute to such musicians as Albert Ayler, Jimi Hendrix, Cecil Taylor, Harry Partch, Derek Bailey, Iannis Xenakis, and Anthony Braxton among others but structurally and developmentally, the music remains Sharpian.
