Hudson River Compositions

from Elliott Sharp

Poster/Print

A folio of graphic and algorithmic scores by Elliott Sharp from 1974 in an edition of 10, signed and numbered. Set of 11 prints on 80 lb. 8.5"x11" vellum packed in a transparent-smoke acid-free poly envelope. One set was found in a storage room - this is definitely the last one available from the first edition!

During 1972, E# began composing graphic scores both for the sheer synesthetic pleasure of it and partly out of frustration at the limitations of group improvisation sessions where the greater musicmaking might be subjugated to the whims of ego and pointless virtuosity. In the summer of 1974 he was living on the Hudson River in upstate NYC and exploring algorithmic approaches as well and hoped to combine these forces in a set of pieces. The musical concerns, though informed by various traditions, were more influenced by the flow of the nearby river and its tides; the sound and sights of the birds and insects; sunrise, sunset, and stars; storms, calm, and all weather in-between. To formalize these approaches, Sharp developed a brief list of simple instruction sets, the Hudson River Compositions, to be used as a score for himself or for other musicians. A few of them, the pieces based on fireflies, bird flocking, and river branching, were visualized in 1974 using a local copy shop. In 2017, visual manifestations were made for the other pieces and these have now all been collected in this folio.
